Editing Navigation Menus

Most websites have two navigation menus: The “primary” navigation menu often appears near the top of every page and shows the main sections of the website (such as About Us, Products, Services, etc.). After a user clicks a link on the primary navigation menu, a “secondary” navigation menu often appears in the right or left sidebar and lists the sub-pages inside that section. In most cases, SiteRocket does not let you edit or reorganize the sections on the primary navigation menu, but you can always control the secondary navigation menus. This page discusses how to edit the secondary navigation menus.

Primary and secondary navigation menus

Does your website have dropdown menus?
On some websites, rolling over the primary navigation menu will reveal dropdown menus that list the “secondary” pages inside the website. To edit a top dropdown for a section of your website, simply edit that section’s secondary navigation menu, and your changes will be reflected in the top dropdown.

How to start editing a secondary navigation menu:

First, it's important to understand that secondary navigation menus are not edited within the web pages where they appear, but are edited and published separately. If you edit a navigation menu – say, by reordering its links – you must first publish that navigation menu before your changes appear on the live website. You can start editing a menu in either of the following ways:

  • Using the “Browse & Edit” tab, navigate to a page that shows the secondary navigation menu that you want to edit. When you roll over it, a line of icons will appear in the upper right-hand corner. Click the "Edit" button to be taken to the separate navigation menu page, where you can make your edits.
  • Click the “Components” tab, and a list of navigation menus will appear. Click the checkbox next to the one you want to edit and then click the "Edit" button. Using the Components tab to locate your secondary navigation menu might be necessary if the secondary navigation is not shown on the website.
Here’s how to edit the links on a secondary navigation menu:
  • To edit a link’s name, click the edit icon that appears near the top right of the link when you roll over it. (Be careful: If you double click a link, it will take you to that page.) Make your edits and click Save.
  • To reorder links, either drag and drop them or use the up/down arrows that appear near the top right when you roll over them.
  • To indent a link, edit the link and click the left/right arrows under its title. If your website has top dropdowns (see above), links that are indented will be hidden from the top dropdowns.
  • To hide a link from the navigation bar, click the checkbox that says “Hide this link from the navbar”. Warning: Clicking this checkbox will hide the link from appearing on the navigation menu, but the page will still be visible to people who know its URL.
  • To add other content such as Quick Links or Rich Text Paragraphs, simply drag these from the Toolbox into your navigation menu. This content will appear on every page that contains this secondary navigation menu.

After editing a secondary navigation menu, you’ll need to publish it in order for your changes to appear on the live website. Secondary navigation menus are published in the same way as regular web pages, please see the Managing Permissions section for more information.

If a secondary navigation menu has been edited and has not yet been published to the live website, it will be highlighted in yellow on all regular web pages where that menu appears. To publish it, edit the secondary navigation menu and click the Publish button – or click its checkbox on the Components tab and click Publish.

Why is my page missing a secondary navigation menu?
Not all web pages contain a secondary navigation menu by default. To add one, edit the page and drag the “Navigation menu” tool from the toolbox into the margin of the page where it should appear.
